For many years, India lagged behind the rest of the world in the field of urban public transport. This changed with the formation of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (DMRC) in 1995, with the mandate to build a Metro system in the Indian capital New Delhi. The project has provided significant environmental and social benefits to the city.

This paper demonstrates a bottom-up approach for developing urban transport strategies taking a case study of the city of Caracas, Venezuela. The strategies are proposed with respect to; solving the existing transportation problems, achievement of set goals for the city and minimization of negative impacts of transportation.

In this paper an attempt is made to study the profile of the bus operations in India with special emphasis on State Transport Undertakings. There is a need to review the regulatory aspects to promote the public transport sector.

This paper measures the relative performance of twenty depots of Haryana State Road Transport (HSRT) for the year 2006-07 using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This study identifies the relatively efficient and inefficient depots, sets benchmarks for the relative inefficient depots and suggests alternative actions that would make inefficient depots improve their efficiency.

Public transport service should live up to certain acceptable standards of quality, comfort and safety before it could gain public patronage. There are of course costs involved, but the people and their quality of life must come first if we destroy public transport we shall be condemned to re-invent it-but at a huge price in terms of environmental degradation, loss of time, traffic jams and the denial of the joys of urban living.

People living in regional cities and towns around the world expect governments to deliver reasonable levels of public transport services in their local area. They understand that a small population base can limit the frequency and span of public transport, but want and deserve an acceptable minimum level of service that offers travel choices. In this paper is discussed the turnaround performance of KSRTC, which provides pointers towards rejuvenating state run transport corporations. The Policy Environment and Internal Operational Environment of State Transport Undertakings are discussed first to highlight the impact they make on the performance of these corporations. The terms financial management may be applied to any kind of undertaking or organization regardless of its aims or constitution. Therefore, proper financial management in Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations (TNSTC) will help not only to provide greater return on investment but also to provide better services at reasonable prices to the society, to pay higher wages and salaries to their employees and to operate business efficiently.
