JAMMU: In what could be termed as insensitivity towards the green gold wealth, only one per cent of forest land has been demarcated in Jammu district by the Forest Department thereby leaving 99 per cent area prone to encroachment by the land grabbers. Moreover, 123 saw mills are operating within the prohibited area in contravention of the ban imposed by the Supreme Court and incident of illicit felling and consequently the outstanding damages cases have been increasing year after year due to the slackness of the Forest Department officers.

JAMMU: J&K State Pollution Control Board (JKSPCB) today organised a public hearing at Phase II, IGC Samba near the project site in village Madhera in connection with setting up of an integrated common hazardous waste treatment, storage, disposal and recycling facility.

Regional Director, SPCB, Shoket Choudhary while speaking, highlighted the utility of the project and stressed upon the urgent need for treatment, storage, disposal and recycling of industrial hazardous waste, bio-medical and e-waste on scientific lines in accordance with Hazardous Waste Rules, 2008 under the provisions of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

Government has constituted a committee for in-depth and exclusive study of all the cement factories established in the State with a view to assess the environmental pollution caused by these units.

Commissioner Secretary, Industries and Commerce Department is the Chairman of the Committee while as Commissioner Secretary, Forest Department or his representative not below the rank of Additional Secretary, Chief Wildlife Warden, Member Secretary, Pollution Control Board, Director Industries, Kashmir and Directors of Environment and Ecology and Geology and Mining are its members.

Apex court guidelines on forest clearance violated

Bandipora: In a brazen violation to the Supreme Court (SC) guidelines, a private company in league with the Border Roads Organizations (BRO) project Beacon's officials and forest department has set up a stone crusher in the dense forests of Bandipora. The Company is run by the sons of the top politicians of ruling party. The stone crusher has come up adjacent to the forest land leased out to the BRO through a State Cabinet decision in 2009.

Government has failed to provide quality Basmati seed to the farmers, thus creating aguish among the farmers community.

SRINAGAR: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today gave nod to the construction of Srinagar and Jammu Ring Roads to decongest traffic and provide alternate communication for commuters taking care up to the year 2042.

Approving the prestigious and most required two road projects involving an expenditure of abut Rs. 3000 crores at a meeting of high level officers of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Jammu and Kashmir State R&B Department here, the Chief Minister directed the NHAI, executing agency for the projects, to formulate the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) and put up the proposals to the R&B Department for finalization.
