Recycling could be the new mantra for industries in the State as policy makers and experts stressed on the need to develop technologies to reuse waste to realise the ‘Vision 2023’ goal of sustainable industrial production in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking at a day-long seminar on ‘Waste to Wealth – Entrepreneurial opportunities’ here on Wednesday, environment and forests department secretary C V Sankar said the concepts of industries are changing and there is a need to change the process so that waste could be reused.

Chennai ranks fifth in carbon emissions from the transport sector among 54 South Asian cities, according to a study done by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiative. NAMAKKAL: The Cauvery river, the main source of water for most parts of the state, is facing a serious threat from the untreated industrial effluents, particularly from dyeing units and sewerage, being let into it.

On a stretch of about 80 km in the district, two municipalities and five town panchayats contribute hugely to the contamination of the river water. Nearly 10 million litres of sewage is let into the Cauvery by Kumarapalayam and Pallipalayam municipalities, while a half of that quantity flows into the channels that connect the river from town panchayats -Venkarai, Paundamangalam, Velur, Pothanur and Mohanur situated along the banks.

The Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs 1.20 crore for Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital exclusively to improve the infrastructure and medical facilities for dengue patients, said Dean M Manoharan.

Speaking to newsmen at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Monday, Dean Manoharan said that 1977 persons had undergone treatment so far at the hospital for dengue fever.

CHENNAI: A writ petition was filed in the Madras High Court on Tuesday praying for a direction to the Centre to consider a representation seeking withdrawal of the steep hike in the price of petrol and ensure that fuel is available without difficulty.

In his public interest writ petition, AIADMK advocate R Balasubramanian of Kolathur submitted that the prices of petrol and diesel had been hiked exorbitantly in the last two years without any valid reason.

CHENNAI : Corporation wards which fall under Saidapet and Theyagaraya Nagar constituencies in South Chennai have been chosen by the civic body for a pilot project to cover dustbins.

The project envisions a better garbage disposal system for households in Chennai, by having garbage collected directly from the residents and dumped in large covered bins. This will eliminate the existing process of dumping trash in small dustbins occupying every nook and cranny of the city streets. Overflowing garbage bins and the unbearable stench emanating from them are also expected to be arrested.
