MGNREGS is a poverty alleviation programme implemented pan India. As an employment guarantee scheme, it successfully captures information on the number of jobs and assets created. However, assessment of the multiple climate co-benefits arising from these assets has been a blind spot.

This report summarises the findings of the assessment for all 28 states of India. The timescale for the analysis is the near or short-term period of the 2030s (2021–2050), and it has been compared with the climate of the near past historical period (1990–2019) at a district level.

India has the fourth largest installed capacity of wind energy in the world, with the addition of 41 GW as of June 2022. However, this figure is quite low when consider India’s potential of 695.5 GW at 120 m hub height and 302 GW at 100 m hub height.
