This report introduces an analytical framework to better understand the drivers, triggers and impacts of internal displacement in the context of climate change.

This technical paper represents an initial attempt to assess the risk of disaster-induced displacement in eight countries in South Asia – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

IDMC’s latest Global Estimates report shows that 22 million people were displaced in 2013 by disasters brought on by natural hazard events. As in previous years, the worst affected region is Asia, where 19 million people, or 87.1 per cent of the global total, were displaced during the year.

Climate change is already increasing the frequency and intensity of natural hazards, and the numbers of natural disasters reported and people affected are rising. However, data on disaster-related displacement has not been consistently collected or analysed. This report presents the results of a study carried out by IDMC and OCHA earlier this year.
