TURA: An attempt to extract coal from a used mine shaft in Siju area of South Garo Hills proved disastrous for a group of locals when three of them reportedly lost their lives after inhaling toxic fumes deep inside the coal pit several hundred feet below the surface of the ground. Among the dead was the owner of the mine.

SHILLONG: In the bid to safeguard the forest cover of the State, the State Cabinet has approved the constitution of the Meghalaya State Forest Development Agency in accordance with the directives of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest.

TURA: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Monday handed over Nirmal Gram Puraskar Awards to seventy-one villages of West Garo Hills, the highest achievement for the state, in a glittering programmee at the district auditorium here.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has refuted recent claims made by Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma that land issues pertaining to the two mega road projects in the State have been resolved.

SHILLONG: The State Government’s failure to live up with the committed urban developmental reforms underlined by the Union Ministry of Urban Development has had its impact on the centrally funded third phase of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS).

SHILLONG: The inability of the State Government to conduct Municipal elections in the State has hit the overall implementation of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) (Phase III) under the JNNURM after the Central Government decided to cut the 2nd installment of fund to the State by 10 per cent.

SHILLONG: Seventeen towns and cities have been chosen as benificiaries under the Rajiv Awas Yojna. In pursuance of the Government’s vision of creating a slum-free India, a new scheme called ‘Rajiv Awas Yojana’(RAY) was launched on June 2 this year, which is expected to cover about 250 cities across the country by the end of the 12th Plan.

The New Shillong Township project was conceived to accommodate the future population of Shillong as projected in the Shillong Master Plan and the State had earmarked 500 hectares of land to be acquired in Phase-I – for uses like administrative, commercial, community facilities, institutional, general housing and basic infrastructure, Ampareen said.
