SHILLONG: The State Forest Department recently held a workshop on the theme “Definition of Forests and Conflict Resolution in the context of Meghalaya.” This year is also the International Year of Forests. For decades, forest land in Meghalaya has been diverted for non-forest purposes, mainly for mining particularly in Jaintia Hills by flouting the Forest Conservation Act 1980. The question is why the need for a definition now?

SHILLONG: Taking cognizance of prospects of aquaculture for improvement of rural economy, the State Government today came up with a draft document on Aquaculture Mission. The draft document will elicit public views on aquaculture in the State.

“Every place in Meghalaya has some mineral or the other. Should we exploit these non-renewable resources at great cost to the environment or use the renewable resources which are available in abundance?” the Chief Minister asked.

SHILLONG: At a time when Meghalaya is finding ways and means to comply with the Union Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Management Rules, 2011 to curb the plastic menace, the cement plants in the State can come forward with a process of incineration.

It was mentioned that the roads will be widened right from Lad Jingthang Briew, Phudmuri till Stand Bus, Mawdatbaki, and also connecting the road from Stephan Memorial School, Mawroh with Kynton Massar and the road leading to NEHU.
It was mentioned that around Rs 2.60 crores is earmarked for this project which falls under the SPA Scheme 2010-2011 of the Planning Department, Government of India.
