HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government has directed the Forest department to depute senior officials to visit the areas leased out for mining iron ore to Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) and other companies in the Bellary reserve forest of Anantapur district.

ANANTAPUR, Oct. 30: The Anantapur division forest officer, Mr Kallol Biswas, on Friday cancelled the mining lease for Anantapur Mining Company (AMC), owned by Mr Gali Janardhan Reddy, even as he alleged that personnel from Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC), an AMC associate, had tried to attack him.

ANANTAPUR, Sept. 22: Industrial pollutants are contaminating the Penna river in Anantapur district.

Many industries located along the banks are indiscriminately releasing effluents into the river at Tadipatri which has constant groundwater levels in the district.

There are 200 granite and 1,000 blackstone industries concentrated in and around Tadipatri.

All but half a dozen of the 175 families in Palavai village, Anantapur, are sending members to work in the NREGS sites. The number of women going for that work keeps increasing.

Aug. 25: Illegal sand transporters have focused their attention on the sand dunes along the banks of river Penna in the Anantapur district.
The Penna river passes through Peddapappur, Yellanur, Putlur and Roddam mandals and is the main source of drinking and irrigation water in these mandals. But illegal sand transportation has resulted in depletion of ground water levels along the riverbank.

Aug. 6: The lack of rainfall during monsoon has severely affected drinking water supply in several parts of the state.
In Anantapur, an acute drinking water crisis has hit the district after 20 years. Some colonies have not got water for a month. Some areas are getting water through tankers and people are buying a pot of water for Re 1.

Aug. 2: The collective effort of the residents of Nakkaladoddi Narsapuram has made the village free from fluoride contamination. The village is five km from the Guntakal mandal headquarters and has 300 habitations.
In the past, hundreds of people were crippled in the village because of fluoride contamination in water.
