NEW DELHI: The Centre has given the Karnataka government one week to get its act together and stop allowing illegal mining in the forests around Bellary. A report on action taken against three companies must be submitted by July 10.

The Karnataka High Court has directed the State Government to submit details of the investigations on the illegal mining in the State.

The Division Bench comprising Justice V G Sabhahit and Justice A S Bopanna, hearing a Public Interest Litigation on Tuesday, directed the Government to inform the Court about the status of investigations into the issue.

New Delhi: In an interesting twist, the businessman who blew whistle on politically powerful mining magnates in Reddy brothers for allegedly encroaching into Bellary reserve forest and illegally mining iron ore now himself stands accused of the very same offence.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday stayed the Andhra Pradesh high court order permitting Bellary Iron Ores Ltd, a company owned by industrialist S.K. Modi, to export iron ore worth Rs 50 crores from disputed Obulapuram area.

THE Andhra Pradesh government, in Supreme Court on Wednesday, accused the whistle-blower in the Bellary mining case of indulging in similar illegal activities as by the Reddy brothers. The apex court acting on the plea of state government restrained SK Modi-owned Bellary Iron Ore Pvt Ltd (BIOP) from exporting 1.03 lakh tonnes of mined iron ore.
