Nov. 3: The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has decided to conduct the 2010 tiger census itself in the wake of allegations that states are fudging the tiger figures.
NTCA will collect only raw data from the state forest departments and compile its own figures using various techniques.

After stiff opposition from activists, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has scrapped its ambitious project of conducting the tree census through Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global Information System (GIS). Instead, it is now planning to opt for the manual census done with the help of digital photography.

To prepare an action plan on the tiger census, a meeting will be held at Bhandipura in November, said DCF Marcandeya.

The latest method of tiger census by Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is throwing up surprises. It was earlier reported that Rajaji National Park had 24 tigers. By photo-mapping, this figure has come down to 10-12 tigers.

Dehra Dun: Nearly 12 tigers have gone missing from the Rajaji National Park, forest department officials said on Monday.

In its latest tiger count, the Wildlife Institute of India has reported at least 10 tigers less than the previous estimate made at the Rajaji sanctuary in Uttarakhand.
