Dehra Dun, June 9: A tiger census would be conducted in October, 2009, by the Wildlife Institute of India (WIT) after a gap of two years amid fears of declining population of the animal in the country.
The WII would employ latest gadgets like camera traps and ecological density methods to conduct the census to know the exact population of tigers and prepare their DNA profile, WII sources said.

Guwahati: The population of the precious one-horned Rhinoceros in the famous Kaziranga National Park (KNP) in Assam has registered a considerable increase as per the latest census carried out by the Assam Forest and Wildlife Department with the help of experts from different wildlife NGOs.
The WWF authorities, who are now experimenting with translocation of rhinos, pointed out that Pobitora wildlife sanctuary has the highest density of rhinos in the world. The rhino may not be as glamorous as the tiger, but they are equally sought-after in international markets, which makes the animal more vulnerable to poachers.
Hyderabad, May 15: The tiger population in the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve has been put at around 75 including cubs, according to the latest census by the Wild Life Wing of the AP forest department.
Sources in the department said that there are around 100 panthers in the tiger reserve area.
If the government is to modernise the census process, the next decennial census to be held in 2011 should make collection of information on the aam admi a priority.
JAIPUR: Leopards made merry in the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan when the tigers were away over the past few years. The absence of the big cat from the once prestigious Project Tiger sanctuary in Alwar district after their total disappearance in 2004-05 apparently led to the increase of the spotted tribe in place of the striped ones in recent times.
