Ahmedabad: The state may be eyeing major investment in the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) but the government will have to redesign the project. Reason: A study commissioned by the Centre to Chennai-based Anna University has reported heavy soil erosion in the region.

''The Cabinet has given its nod for the permanent solution to check sea erosion in 300 km coastline of Karnataka. The work will commence after monsoon and sea erosion will be checked permanently by 2018,'' said District-in-Charge Minister Krishna Palemar.

SRM University faculties of the department of civil engineering Dr Deeptha Thattai and R Sathyanathan submitted a feasibility study of coastal erosion in Karnataka to the state government through Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj here at KCCI.

The study was initiated by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry as its corporate social responsibility project to commemorate the 70th anniversary.

With the government yet to come out with a comprehensive long-term solution for the continuing sea erosion, fishermen in the coastal villages of Vaithikuppam, Solai Nagar, Kuruchikuppam and Kalapet are anxious about their future.

Although rain receded in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Wednesday, it claimed the life of Rama Marakala (48) of Manur of Kota Gram Panchayat area in Kundapur. Marakala, who was going to her paddy field, slipped and fell, suffocating in the mud.

Out of the Rs 911 crore project cost including ADB loan, for construction of sea walls in various coastal regions, a sum of Rs 223 crore will be utilised for steps to prevent sea erosion in Ullal region, said District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar on Sunday.
