The government on Thursday decided to embark upon mapping the country's 7,500 kmlong coastline to identify areas which are vulnerable to sea erosion, high tide and waves. Once completed, the exercise will facilitate the government in taking corrective measures in helping people living around such pockets.

About 15 kilometres of Goa's famous beaches have been affected by massive sea erosion that is plaguing the state's entire coastline, according to a survey by the Goa government.

The 13th Finance Commission (TFC) has allocated Rs 5,000 crores as forest grant to support ecology-based projects initiated by of ministry of forests and environment (MF&E).

Another Rs 2,063 crores have been allocated to support for state-specific projects.

The Western Ghat Task Force Chairman Ananth Hegde Ashisara informed that the Task Force has chalked out plans to launch 'Coastal Green Shield Project' in the three coastal districts of the State with an integrated approach to protect the coast from several environmental threats including severe recurring sea erosion and other problems.

NAGERCOIL: The Government has allotted a sum of Rs.5.26 crore for the construction of anti-sea erosion walls in six coastal villages, said Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan.

Laying the foundation stone for the construction of anti-sea erosion walls at a function held at Erayammanthurai on Thursday, he said that such walls would be constructed at Erayammanthurai at a cost of Rs. 1.81 crore.
