NEW DELHI: When he envisioned a suitable new office space for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), noted architect and urban design consultant Raj Rewal wanted the structure to be an amalgamation of dynamism, sustainability and energy efficiency. Almost four years later now, DMRC's new address boasts of all three.

Year 2010 could be a landmark for city transport. With the state transport department having drawn up an elaborate makeover plan to improve the Capital's public transport system, you may be tempted to dump your car and hop on to a train, bus or cab. And, if the plan on paper is anything to go by, all this will be comfortable, accessible, reliable and easy on your pocket too.

In a shocking incident, a huge girder crushed a passing vehicle and seriously injured the driver, after it allegedly fell at a Metro construction site near the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital last week. Attributed to a crane malfunction, the falling debris destroyed the car, while the driver allegedly sustained multiple fractures, according to the sources.

This comes hot on the heels of the widely reported Supratim Dutta incident, wherein an angle had gone through the body of the HCL employee after he met with an accident at the MG Road Metro site earlier this month.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who has been in power for almost 10 years, has been credited with taking Delhi from a doom city to a boom city. But her detractors say she has made the city a huge construction site, as it gears up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. How do you see your two tenures?

Selected stations: Janakpuri (West), Rohini (West), Pitampura Parking lots to be extended to other stations Provision for shopping malls and ATMs NEW DELHI: To ensure that parking space at the Capital's Metro railway stations does not end up resembling the other local car parks, where considerable time and effort are wasted by motorists in grabbing the elusive free spot, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation now plans to develop multi-level parking lots. These parking lots will come up at Janakpuri (West), Rohini (West) and Pitampura Metro stations and tenders have been invited.

The second metro tunnel at Hauz Khas was completed today at 11.30 a.m. The Delhi Metro has completed this project three weeks ahead of schedule. This construction of the tunnel had begun in February this year. The 1,453 metre long tunnel was completed just in four months. This tunnel is parallel to the first tunnel from Malviya Nagar to Hauz Khas, which was completed on May 31. The two tunnels will permit movement of Metro trains that will run on the Central Secretariat-Gurgaon section of Phase-II. The section would be opened to the public in 2010.

DMRC is all set to complete the Vishvavidyala-Jehangirpuri line a record 10 months ahead of schedule. The 6.36-km stretch, which will ferry 1.51 lakh commuters in two years' time, is expected to be ready by December 2008 Megha Suri | TNN
