It is certainly not a bumpy ride for the DMRC. A study by IIT students, based on vibration levels inside the trains, states the metro is one of the most comfortable modes of transport and that it adheres to international standards. The study, carried out with the help of equipment developed by UK's Loughborough University, was conducted on the elevated and underground sections of all three operational lines of the Delhi Metro. The results from all sections were within the "most comfortable' category.

Inaugurating the new Shahdara-Dilshad Garden line of the Delhi Metro on Tuesday, Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy acknowledged that the metro railway was an example of public transport worth emulating. Citing the example of the United States where private transport is encouraged, Mr. Reddy said in the face of global challenges like increasing fuel rates and climate change, modes of transport like the metro should be encouraged.

The Delhi High Court dismissed a petition seeking to scrap Metro's elevated corridor project in south Delhi on the ground that it would cause noise pollution in residential areas on Friday. A Bench headed by Justice T S Thakur, however, directed the Centre and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC) to make all possible efforts to reduce the level of noise pollution which will be caused by the Metro rail running on the elevated corridor.

It's not just the average Delhiite, even those involved in the project are slowly getting disillusioned by the bus rapid transit (BRT) system and are worried about its success rate. For officials who are in the transport department, the prospect of other project like tramways is also bleak. "The BRT is a complete failure. The BRT does not contribute to capacity building at all rather it adds to the mess thereby slowing traffic. It should not have been brought to existence at all. The concept should have been studied in detail before its implementation.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Managing Director E. Sreedharan has underlined the need for forming an association of Indian metros to act as a catalyst for exchange of information among different cities planning a metro railway. Addressing a seminar here on Monday, Dr. Sreedharan also emphasised the need for standardisation in various spheres such as ticketing, train and tunnel dimension, loading standards, type of traction and design of civil structures. This, he explained, would help in reducing costs and ensuring tested quality of designs and procedures.
