The number of the people suffering from hepatitis B and C viruses has been increasing in Bangladesh and it is time to raise awareness among the people to prevent and treat the diseases which often turn into fatal.
LUCKNOW: Over a thousand patients of hepatitis B and C are reported at gastroenterology department of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) annually. Specific observations indicate that 10-12 per cent report in terminal stages of their disease.
Experts at a thanksgiving ceremony yesterday said around eight percent of the country's total population is infected with hepatitis B virus, while below one percent with hepatitis C virus.
They also said that 3.5 percent of the pregnant mothers are affected with hepatitis B.

The outbreak of hepatitis-B in Modasa, that claimed more than 60 lives, on account of reuse of disposable syringes shocked the state.
Deaths because of hepatitis were on the increase in the interiors of Sindh, said Sindh Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor Dr Abdul Qadir Mughal.
But the poor of the province were not aware of the killer disease, he said on Tuesday at the launching of a three-day campaign to diagnose hepatitis B and C, at the university dispensary.
