LUCKNOW: After throwing open thermal power generation to private players, the UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) is mulling to repeat the act with hydro power as well.

On Monday, a decision to this effect was taken at a review meeting presided over by UPPCL chairman-cum-managing director Navneet Sehgal.

Nearly half-a-dozen agreements and as many MoUs in fields ranging from hydro power to health to IT to civil aviation were signed between India and Bhutan today in the presence of visiting Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

With huge potential to generate power in the Northeastern region remaining untapped, the Government has earmarked an investment of over Rs 37,400 crore for setting up power projects to add 5,350 MW capacity by 2016, reports PTI. The Ministry of Power plans to add 5,350 MW power generation capacity in the Northeast, apart from the 3,926 MW which is under various stages of construction.

The Meghalaya government has okayed the execution of the 500 MW thermal power project by the state-run North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).

"One per cent of the project cost would be used for the development works in the project area in the East Garo Hills district," Meghalaya Power minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after a cabinet meeting last night.

The Department of Science and Technology of the Central government, under the Integrated Rural Energy Planning Programme (IREP), has taken over the maintenance of nearly 1,000 micro hydel projects abandoned across the state. Around 900 of these are totally defunct.

Anandpur Sahib: The hydropower generation at Anandpur Sahib hydel channel has come to a halt with Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) stopping water supply to the channel.
