This study evaluated the persistence of heavy metals, cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) in surficial marine sediments and their relationship with textural characteristics. Furthermore, heavy metal distribution was studied against organic carbon concentration within the sediments. Our results suggest that Cochin estuary is highly polluted in the case of all heavy metals (Pb of 29.48± 4.37µg/g, Cd of 0.21± 0.17µg/g and Hg of 0.17± 0.15µg/g). All the studied trace elements showed negative correlation with sand particles.

KOCHI: The wheels of bureaucracy has finally creaked to tackle the issue of replacing damaged pipelines in West Kochi, with the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) proposing a project estimated at Rs 2 crores for replacing old and damaged underground water pipelines in the area.

The intervention of the State government will be sought to solve the drinking water crisis in the city.

The project, which is expected to increase the drinking water supply to Kochi and neighbouring local bodies, is hanging fire due to the dispute over the route for laying the pipelines. The local bodies of Piravam, Mulanthuruthy and Edakattuvayal had earlier objected to cutting open the main road connecting Piravam and Ernakulam for laying the supply pipelines. They had also suggested an alternative route for laying the pipes. The proposal to cut open the road had also ignited widespread protests.

Water bodies are present on both side of the bypass and the waste gets mixed which results in the rise of waterborne diseases. “We have informed it to the municipal authorities, but though they assured us that they would take necessary steps, they asked us not to inform any media about the matter,” said Shaji.
