Margao Municipal Council’s solid waste management plant finally stands commissioned at Sonsodo. Open dumping of waste is now a thing of the past. But, the civic body has a long way to go in tackling tons of waste generated in the commercial capital, reports Guilherme Almeida

After a bitter experience with Komex International and Hyquip Ltd, Margao Municipal Council’s solid waste treatment plant has finally taken shape at Sonsodo. Fomento Green has commissioned its waste treatment plant at the site as per the concession agreement with the Margao civic body. But, a host of issues remain unresolved, including door-to-door waste collection, landfill site for the residual waste, capping of existing waste, consultant to certify work at the plant and to guide the civic body in signing the modified agreement with Fomento Green.

The residents of Mandur remained indoors as ban orders under Section 144 of the CrPC remained in force for the fourth consecutive day in the village in the wake of protests against dumping of garbage at the landfill site.

Amid tight security, nearly 200 truckloads of garbage from the City were dumped at the landfill site. Strong protests had broken out against what the villagers call deception by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

The Mysore City Corporation (MCC) has intensified its efforts to dissipate the message over garbage disposal across the city.

Besides initiating projects to convert waste into energy by adopting new technologies by tying up with a couple of industries and institutions, it has now taken up an intensive campaign to spread the message of segregation of garbage at its origin. Segregation is being done presently at its waste management plant where the civic agency’s woirkers are engaged in the onerous task. MCC is also facing an acute shortage of manpower at the plant.

More than 100 vehicles stranded; residents continue protest

Stiff resistance by the residents of Mandur against dumping garbage in the landfill there has forced more than 100 trucks to be stationed near the Hoskote Circle. On Tuesday too, there was no sign of the villagers relenting. The villagers’ protest had started Sunday, following which many were detained at the Avalahalli police station. They were released after Health and Family Welfare Minister Aravind Limbavali allegedly had an heated argument with the police officials.

Waste-to-Energy (WtE), the process of creating energy from waste, has gained broad appeal domestically and internationally with programs such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) providing funding for many WtE projects across the world.

The BMC has appointed a technical advisory committee of experts to tackle solid waste management problems in the city. It will have its first meeting in early December.

With a strong tradition of recycling and incinerating, it now has too many waste-to-energy incinerators and not enough rubbish to meet demand.

‘Present contractors shall carry dry and wet wastes separately’

The High Court on Thursday set a deadline of two weeks for the Karnataka government and BBMP to submit a status report on steps taken to tackle the garbage menace in Bangalore. Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by city-based advocate G R Mohan, seeking supersession of the BBMP for its failure to act on the garbage disposal issue, the division bench comprising Chief Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice B V Nagarathna mentioned specific steps to be followed in dealing with garbage disposal.
