Strong Wind Keeps Blaze Alive, Villagers Send Dumpers Away

Pune: Villagers from Phursungi and Uruli on Tuesday blocked trucks carrying waste from entering the garbage depot to protest against the Pune Municipal Corporation’s inability to control the fire raging at the landfill site since Sunday.
The fire that spread to surrounding piles of waste grew worse on Tuesday. The villagers claimed that three acres of the landfill site had caught fire and clouds of smoke posed a health hazard for them.

Phursungi-Uruli Villagers Warn Of Agitation If Blaze That Broke Out On Sunday Is Not Put Out

A huge fire that broke out at the garbage depot in Phursungi-Uruli on Sunday afternoon was not completely extinguished till late Monday evening, villagers said. They complained of irritation in the eyes and difficulty in breathing as the smoke pervaded the area surrounding both villages. The villagers, who have been protesting for years against the very presence of the garbage dump, have threatened to block garbage trucks from entering the depot if the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fails to put out the fire by Tuesday evening.

800 Tonnes Created Daily, It Comprises 80% Of Trash Reaching Landfills

New Delhi: Delhi is among the largest producers of plastic waste in the country generating over 800 metric tonnes per day. Around 750 metric tonnes reach landfill sites daily of which roughly 80% are plastic bags and packaging materials. In fact, the capital is among nine cities across India where plastic forms more than 10% of the total waste generated. What makes it more embarrassing for the local government is that plastic bags have been banned in the city since 2009, and not just once but twice.

Northern Ireland has become the latest region within the British Isles to introduce a levy on disposable carrier bags as the European Commission draws up plans to clamp down on their use.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has planned another waste-to-energy plant in Shastri Park. The land allotment by the Delhi Development Authority for the project is under process.

EDMC Commissioner Sajjan Singh Yadav said: “Initially we had requested for land to be allotted to us but were told there is no available land in East Delhi which is suitable for a sanitary land fill site. We also believe that land fill sites are not the long term solutions.”

The state government on Tuesday told the Bombay High Court that only 12 municipal corporations in the state have proper landfill sites for solid waste management (SWM).

On the other hand, 14 civic corporations, including Mumbai, do not have secured landfill sites. The five municipal corporations that have landfill sites approved by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) are Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur.
