MOVE TO ATTRACT MIGRATORY BIRDS TO SANCTUARIESTHE Gulf of Mannar National Marine Park (GOMNMP) authorities are taking action to promote the arrival of migratory birds to the sanctuaries and tanks in the district.

The State Government has submitted a proposal to the Centre for the preservation of all the wetlands in Assam, said the Minister in charge of Environment and Forest, Rockybul Hussain. In reply to a Zero Hour question by Ananta Deka (CPM) in the State Assembly today, the Minister said that the State has 3513 wetlands covering an area of 101239 hectares.

The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC), conducted each year in January, is a waterbird and wetland-monitoring programme initiated in 1987 within the framework of the International Waterbird Census. This report summarises the results of the AWC from 1987 to 2007, comprising counts at 6,705 sites in 27 countries.

Shimla: With an early departure of migratory birds from the Pong Dam and untimely blooming of rhododendron flowers in February acting as alarm signals, scientists and environmentalists today stressed the need for incorporating climate impact and vulnerability into forestry programmes without any further delay.

The Whistler's Warbler (Seicercus whistleri), a threatened migratory bird naturally found in the Himalayan ranges, has been observed in Sultanpur bird sanctuary in Gurgaon after some 25 years. Officials at the sanctuary claim, however, that eminent Indian ornithologist Dr Salim Ali could not observe the 9.5 cm to 12 cm long, yellow bird despite camping for long at the sanctuary.
