Gandhinagar: The Narmada project, tipped as Gujarat

The Supreme Court while hearing the case of Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar canals in the Narmada valley has granted more time to MoEF for filing affidavit, while mentioned that the stay on Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar canal would continue.

This is the second interim report of the committee constituted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (vide O.M. No. 3-87/80-IA-I, dated 09.7.2008 superseded by O.M. of even number dated 02-09-2008 ) for assessing the status of compliance of environmental conditionalities and requirements to be fulfilled by project authorities of Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) and Indira Sagar Project (ISP).

India is emerging as a world leader in irrigation schemes, and the 458-km Narmada Main Canal-the largest concrete-lined irrigation canal in the world-stands as a monument to the opportunities and challenges that face water providers.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam reached a height of 121.92 m in 2006 and at this height the dam has enough water to generate most of the promised benefits - irrigation, drinking water, and electricity. However, currently only 30% of the targeted villages receive regular water supplies, less than 20% of the canal network has been constructed and power generation remains well below the generation capacity reached. Even as the dam construction nears completion, rehabilitation of several thousand families is poor or incomplete. This, for a project that has had clearly laid out legal mandates to alleviate human and environmental costs, and has been under continuous public scrutiny and Supreme Court monitoring.

Madhya Pradesh, which cradles many rivers, lakes and waterfalls in the great Malwa plateau, is today finding its water sources not enough to quench the thirst of its fast-growing cities.

New Delhi: The SC on Friday issued notice to Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar but refused to stay a Madhya Pradesh HC order that had stalled all work on the canal projects of Omkareswar and Indira Sagar dams till the state completed relief and rehabilitation measures on equal footing for the dam oustees as well as canal affected families.

Water governance in the Narmada river basin has been in the eye of a controversial storm from the time of independence.

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has decided to ask Narmada Control Authority (NCA) to give clearance for constructing piers on Narmada dam, stationary at 121.92 metres for two years.
