Though the government has banned polythene bags in the city, it has not yet come up with a better environment-friendly alternative.

Recently, some newspapers published articles where the government is asking people to suggest an alternative to plastic bags.

The campaign to start from Delhi

The PIL filed by INFORSE-IDL in Madras High Court, asking for a complete ban on manufacture, trading and use of 'use & throw plastic products & carry bags upto 150 microns thickness (both virgin & recycled) and kudams/containers made of recycled plastics.

Thousands of banned polythene shopping bags have reappeared, again exposing the people across the country to the threat of severe environmental degradation, because the government is taking no measures against the manufacturing, marketing and use of the bags.

New Delhi: Setting a standard for biodegradable plastic bags for the first time, the Central Pollution Control Board has laid down specifications for such bags in the Capital.

Now, these bags have to be compostable and prescribe to the Bureau of Indian Standard of IS/ISO 17088:2008 for them.
