MARGAO: Finally taking cognizance of the 25,000 tons of hazardous waste lying unattended in the Cuncolim Industrial estate, Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar on Thursday issued a host of directions to the IDC as well as the occupier of the plot containing the waste in the Industrial estate.

Parrikar set a 15-day deadline on Ms The Axis to cover the hazardous waste with tarpaulin sheets as a temporary measure in view of the fast approaching monsoons. Proposes assignment for students on waste collection

Asserting that the high level task force is in the process of finalizing the right technology for setting up two waste treatments plants in the state, Environment Minister, Alina Saldanha on Sunday said a proposal is put forth before the Education Department to consider waste collection exercise by students from their homes as an assignment which will make them eligible for marks in the subject of science or environmental science.

PANJIM: Not satisfied with the ‘short-term measures’ undertaken by M/s The Axis to ensure safe storage of hazardous waste dumped at plot No. L-2 in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, the Goa State Pollution Control Board has asked the company to initiate immediate action to ensure temporary safe storage of the waste.

In directions issued on March 8, the Board has asked the company among other things to construct a shed around the hazardous waste with GI sheets on the sides, a new boundary wall to keep intruders and stray animals out, storm water drains leading to a settling tank and construct four test wells.

VASCO: Vasco MLA and KTC Chairman Carlos Almeida has stated that the state government will get a grant of Rs 100 crore from Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to develop the Vasco city by the end of next year.

“I will also see that Vasco will be free of handcarts, following the construction of the fish and the vegetable markets,” informed Almeida while addressing a press conference on Thursday, where he presented his progress card of the first year in the government.
