Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) in the matter of Environment Pollution & Health Hazards in the State Vs State of Meghalaya & Others dated 24/03/2017 regarding hotels and guest houses in Shillong releasing untreated polluted water directly to rivers. By order dated 10.2.2017, NGT had directed the Meghalaya State PCB to verify the claim of these hotels that they had complied with the directions of the Board. It is stated in the reports of the State PCB that they are compliant in all respects.

It is stated that the Shillong peak and its slopes are the source of drinking water where various streams and rivulets originate and any disturbance in the existing conditions of the area, as per the applicants, would endanger the catchment area.

Counsel appearing for the State of Meghalaya has filed a Status Report which mentions that there is 30,12,309 metric ton of coal lying in open for which the royalty has not been obtained.

Tribunal directs the State of Meghalaya to file an affidavit placing the complete methodology on record as to how they propose to deal with the disposal of the coal vested in the State.
