RESIDENTS of Seliyanallur panchayat under Manoor Panchayat Union are living in a state of fear as the shock waves triggered by the explosives, being used in a private stone quarry functioning in the panchayat area, have been giving them sleepless nights for the past several months.

The High Court has issued an injunction against mining at Chikkanayakanahalli forest area in Tumkur district.

Hearing a public interest litigation by Basavaraj C S and six others, residents of Hosabeedi Chikka nayakanahalli, the division bench comprising Chief Justice P D Dinakaran and Justice V G Sabhahit, issued this injunction.

Chennai The Madras High Court has directed the Pollution Control Board (PCB) to issue notice to the stone crusher units in the cluster areas in Tirusoolam and Pallavaram near Chennai asking why their units should not be closed down if operated without the consent of the PCB and without complying with the norms laid down by the NEERI, irrespective of their distance from the residential area.

Quarry dust is known to alter the stomatal index of most of the plants studies. But in some plants the stomatal index remains unaffected or undergo little changes. Study carried out on selected plant species growing in the vicinity revealed foliar epidermal responses to quarry dust pollution which differed from species to species.
