It was reported in November 2007, that the Ministry of Coal allotted M/s Adani Power Ltd. a block for open cast coal mining in Lohara, Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. The block is six kilometres from Chandrapur city and measures 1,750 ha. This vast area is a combination of 1,598.71 ha of Reserve Forest, 86.66 ha of government owned land and 64.63 ha of private land.

Starting this year, an evaluation of tiger reserves by independent wildlife experts like Belinda Wright, Valmik Thapar and Ullas Karanth besides a host of others could become an annual feature.

The Environment and Forests Ministry is expected to take a final decision on the issue along with the dates for the Tiger Census 2009 in the next few days.

The Forest department has sent a proposal to the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) for a third tiger reserve in the State.

The location of the proposed tiger reserved was identified at Amangarh in Bijnore adjacent to Corbett National Park

Forest Department to seek State government

Wildlife Conservation Trust, Mumbai has provided Rs 97.65 lakh 65 thousand to Madhya Pradesh Tiger Foundation for strengthening the basic structures of conservation in tiger reserves in the state. Minister of State for Forests and chairman of Tiger Foundation Society Rajendra Shukla informed that these funds would be utilised in Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench Tiger reserves.
