BALASORE: The Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj district, the fourth biggest reserve in India, has lost 40 Royal Bengal tigers in the last five years. It has just 61 tigers at present. This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh in the Rajya Sabha recently.

The opposition Congress in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly today shouted slogans and staged a walkout over the issue of illegal poaching of tigers and decline in the population of the big cat.
Opposition members had brought posters, with pictures of tigers, along which they wore as a jacket. Below the picture of tigers in the poster, was written 'Save Me'.

While refusing to act against officials responsible for the tiger going extinct in Panna, Madhya Pradesh on Monday joined issue with the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), advising it to take more effective steps to increase the tiger population in the country.

Udhagamandalam: Vigil has been stepped up at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve near here, according to the Field Director of the reserve Rajiv K.Srivastava. Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, he said that the reserve had been informed that some poachers who had been active in the North were moving towards the South.

Forest Department officials said that the four-year-old tigress may have died of fatigue and hunger. However, they are waiting for the postmortem report.

The tigress which was shifted to Bhadra tiger reserve by the Forest Department, after it was trapped at a private resort at Nagarhole National Park died on Saturday morning.

New Delhi, July 3 In a boost to tiger conservation efforts, the Centre has approved a proposal for implementing the tripartite agreement between the Environment Ministry, State Governments and tiger reserves.

From 2001 April to March 2009 different Field Directors have given priority to different things forgetting the basics of management of tiger reserve that security was the most important item as Panna Tiger Reserve is surrounded by large number of villages indulging in poaching. Monitoring of movement of Pardhis and bahelias who thrive basically on poaching has not been properly done.
