Former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda's constituency Hassan, which also happens to be his home district, is quite possibly one of the best nurtured electoral regions in Karnataka. His rivals in the Congress and bjp concede that if development alone were the criterion, he and his family would
win the seat for decades to come.

On October 3, Mylswamy Annadurai, the mission director, Chandrayaan-1, is visibly tense. The spacecraft, moved out the previous day from the laboratories of the isro Satellite Centre in Bangalore, is being transported at 20 kmph by road to the spaceport in Sriharikota, some 300 km away. Annadurai is tense because a local newspaper has gone and splashed the picture of the convoy on its front page.

In the next few weeks the Karnataka government will begin deliberating on the future of Chamalapura, a tiny hamlet near Mysore, and its surroundings. According to highly placed sources in the state's energy department, feasibility studies will be commissioned soon for setting up a coal-fired thermal power plant in and around the village.
