KOLKATA, March. 29: At a time when tuberculosis cases - including multi-drug resistant strains of the disease - are on the rise in the state, the state health department is gradually reducing the intake capacity of tuberculosis sanatoriums in the state.

Mumbai In the last two years, at least seven doctors working in the 1,000-bedded Sewree TB Hospital were infected with tuberculosis. It is little wonder that only 27 of the 50 posts for medical professionals are now filled in the city

Matara: The parents of the students at seven schools in Matara District today opposed the government program to vaccinate the students for tuberculosis.

The Health Ministry has scheduled to carry out its vaccination programme for tuberculosis in Matara district this morning, but it has to be cancelled due to parents' objections, the Ministry said.

The world might have progressed by leaps and bounds over the years, but when it comes to tuberculosis scenario in Kashmir the people affected by it are unwilling to share information as they fear isolation.

Rio De Janeiro: The Global TB Control Report released here on World TB Day revealed that one out of four TB deaths in the world are HIV-related, twice as many as previously recognised.

Experts said that these numbers should serve as a warning signal to high-burden countries like India to desist from reducing investment in public health in view of the global economic meltdown.

Chikmagalur: As many as 7,653 TB patients have been detected in Chikmagalur district between 2003 and 2008, said TB Control Officer.

In a press release, he said in 2003, it was 1,288; 1,500 in 2004; 1,437 in 2005; 1,224 in 2006; 1,170 in 2007 and 1,134 in 2008.

The revised National TB Control programme, 19 sputum examination centres have been started in district to screen TB.

LUCKNOW: Several thick government files with yellowed pages are piled up high inside the tuberculosis cell of the state health department giving it the `normal'look of any government office. But the environment hasn't dampened the thinking process of the people working in this cell.

Sri Lanka has 17,000 Tuberculosis (TB) patients. Between 8,000 and 11,000 new TB patients are discovered from the country every year, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

A total of 8,996 new TB patients were discovered last year, the spokesman said. Meanwhile Sri Lanka has targeted to eradicate TB by 2015. In 1990 there were 2,770 TB deaths but in 2008 only 1685 TB deaths were reported.
