Mumbai: There is a growing belief among experts that multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR), and its deadlier cousin, the extensively-drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR), may soon become bigger threats than HIV-AIDS. Yet these new strains of TB do not find any mention in the national TB control programme. Worse, Mumbai has no accredited laboratory to confirm cases of MDR and XDR TB.

Each year, more than 0.3 million people end up with tuberculosis (TB) in Pakistan, which already ranks eighth among high TB burden countries in the world with an estimated prevalence of 181/100,000.
