Hyderabad, Nov. 4: The Giant African Land Snail (GALS) menace is back in the state and this time showing a more devastating effect. According to the state forest department officials of Araku valley, Paderu and Anantagiri in Visakhapatnam district, Vizaianagaram border area and other Agency areas are the most affected.

NEW DELHI: The five-way alliance of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Indian born steel magnate L. N. Mittal, French energy giant Total, GAIL (India) and Oil India will take a call on the project structure and funding of the 14-15 million tonnes refinery and petrochemical project at Vizag in Andhra Pradesh in November.

HYDERABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority on Wednesday unveiled a grandiose plan to combat natural and man-made disasters.

NDMA vice-chairman Gen. N.C. Vij and member M. Shashidhar Reddy said a World Bank-funded, Rs. 1,600-crore National Cyclonic Risk Mitigation Project was being finalised for 13 coastal States and Union Territories.

Hyderabad, Sept. 24: The Centre will soon set up a National Cyclone Disaster Management Institute at Visakhapatnam. General N.C. Vij, vice-chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority, said here on Wednesday that the state government had offered land for the institute.

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 22: More than 30 years after they were first discovered, the rich bauxite deposits in Vizag Agency tracts continue to cause controversy. Though the previous Telugu Desam government signed two MoUs for mining bauxite, they did not take off.

Hyderabad, Sept. 21: Biological heritage sites in the state are facing serious threats because of the upcoming Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and thermal power plants. Wildlife experts are concerned about the deathblow to the bird preservation sites in the state due to the units.

Visakhapatnam, Sept. 7: Visakhapatnam would soon become another Chennai at the rate in which the groundwater in the district is turning salty. Residents of coastal battery near the collectorate, Kota Veedhi, the old post office and the port areas in One Town, Mulakuddu and Nagarapalem besides, parts of Thagarapuvalasa in the rural areas were in distress recently after it was found that the water they drew from their wells tasted salty.
