The spectre of drought looms large over eight Haryana districts facing acute water shortage.

There was shortfall of about 7,000 cusecs of water per day as the supply from the Sutlej and Yamuna canal water schemes has dropped to 50 per cent.

The changes undergone by physico-chemical properties of soil, profile morphology and the productivity index, as a result of bringing the barren land under Poplar plantation, were evaluated in Yamuna Nagar District of Haryana, where large chunks of land have been raised as block plantation with Poplar. The soils supporting Poplar plantations were enriched with organic carbon and nutrients.

Yamunanagar: People of the state are likely to face a shortage of sand, grit and stones for the next two months as the district administration has ordered the closure of mining in Yamuna and seasonal rivulets and work at 250 stone crushers has also come to a halt in the district.

With a view to developing the district as a major tourist destination, the district administration has decided to spend Rs 3.21 crore on the beautification and maintenance of major historical and religious places, including Adibadri, Rin Mochan, Kapal Mochan and Surya Kund, in the Shivalik Hills here.

Chandigarh: A 2-MW biomass waste-based co-generation power plant has been commissioned at Yamunanagar at a cost of Rs 15.23 crore at Bharat Starch Industries, said Sumita Misra, Director, Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA). The plywood waste, available in huge quantity in Yamunanagar, will be used in the project, she added.

A study was conducted to estimate the soil organic carbon pool under Eucalyptus, Poplar, Shisham and Teak plantations in Haridwar and Dehra Dun, districts of Uttarakhand and Yamunanagar District of Haryana State.

Chandigarh: The Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGCL) is venturing into solar power generation by setting up solar energy-based power plants at Panipat, Yamunanagar and Khedar in Hisar.

HPGCL plans to tap the vast solar energy potential and earn carbon credits by generating power through this clean source.

CHANDIGARH: Energy efficiency measures will be implemented in six more municipal council areas of Haryana through the Energy Service Company route, State Chief Secretary Urvashi Gulati said on Tuesday after presiding over a meeting of the State level monitoring committee for implementation of energy conservation measures and Energy Conservation Act-2001.
