The top layer of accumulated sand washed down by floods over millions of years, makes river floodplains into giant aquifers. We propose a scheme for the natural storage of excess monsoon river-water discharge in the extensive and deep sand top layer of the floodplain of the river.

New Delhi: Under the Yamuna Action Plan, about Rs 1,500 crore has been spent so far on cleaning the river and another project worth Rs 4,000 crore is ready to take off. This has, however, made little difference to the state of the river. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit recently observed that the river was no better than a drain.

While the Delhi government had been debating on what needs to be done to clean the river, the pollution levels have only worsened. In its book Sewage Canal: How to Clean the Yamuna, published in 2007, the Centre for Science and Environment reported that the Delhi stretch of the river is not only dead but had an overload of coliform contamination.
