Best practices in green freight for an environmentally sustainable road freight sector in Asia

The efficient movement of goods and services is important in achieving sustainable development. All main modes of freight – road, water, air, and rail – have impacts on the economy, environment, and society that need to be managed. Freight trucks account for 24% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from transport vehicle use and also have a major impact on fuel use and fuel security, air pollution, traffic accidents, and HIV/AIDS. This paper focuses on the road freight sector as it is the dominant mode of freight in Asia. It is a sequel to the paper "Challenges and Opportunities for an Environmentally Sustainable Road Freight Sector in Asia" that was prepared for the 5th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Forum in 2010.
