The Government of Punjab on March 13, 2023, issued the Punjab State Minor Mineral Policy, 2023 to provide sand and gravel at affordable rates to the consumers and further ensure that mining of sand and gravel is undertaken in a transparent and legal manner.

Order of the National Green Tribunal (Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata) in the matter of Pradeep Kumar Dhal & Others Vs State Level Environmental Impact Assessment Authority, Odisha & Others dated 13/03/2023. The matter related to sand mining in violation of the conditions laid down in the environmental clearance dated March 30, 2021 by engaging heavy trucks and transporting sand over the village road in the course of excavation of sand from Baitarani river, Salaba village, Jajpur district.

The matter related to sand mining in CRZ areas affecting the various species of fish. The petitioner had requested for protecting the various fish species in the Palguni and Nethravathi rivers from illegal sand miners.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of In re: News item published in Newspaper Kalam Hindustani dated 22.01.2023 titled “Illegal mining at Kairana’s Ramda in Yamuna, who is responsible?” dated 24/02/2023.

Proceedings in the matter have been initiated suo motu in the light of captioned media report about illegal mining from Yamuna river at Ramda in Kairana tehsil in district Shamli, Uttar Pradesh.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of In re: News item published in The Hindu dated 27.03.2022 titled “Digging up the Chambal”  dated 06/02/2023.

With the objective to bring down the prices of sand and gravel in the State of Punjab, the Punjab State Sand and Gravel Mining Policy, 2023 is notified under Punjab Minor Mineral Rules, 2013 framed under section 15 and section 23C of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Junaid Ayubi Vs State of Uttarakhand & Others dated 06/01/2023.

Grievance in the application is against river bed mining of sand, bajri and boulder at villages Dakpathar, Nawabgarh, Mandi Gangbhewa and Bhimawala, tehsil Vikasnagar, district Dehradun, Uttarakhand which is a large site measuring approximately 123 hectares located on the river bed of Yamuna. According to the applicant, EC has been transferred by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam without following due norms.

The matter related to illegal sand and stone mining taking place in the Aravalli range in the districts of Faridabad, Gurugram and Nuh in Haryana. Pandala Hills near Gairatpur Bas village, Gurgaon has been severely degraded on account of illegal mining, but no steps have been taken for its ecological restoration. Evidence of fresh illegal mining in Pandala Hills was found on a site visit.
