Sanctioning Authority, SEIAA, Is Headless

The Greens in the state are planning to move the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the environmental clearance given by the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) to 17 quarries at a time when the chairman’s post was vacant in the authority. The SEIAA is the nodal agency in the state that provides clearances for quarrying, sand mining and commercial projects in Kerala.

Order of the National Green Tribunal (Western Zone Bench, Pune) in the matter of Vanshakti & Anr V/s Mun. Corpn of Greater Mumbai & Ors. dated 12/02/2014 regarding Kanjurmarg dumping site. A student organisation in the state has urged the government to challenge the National Green Tribunal’s order to ban mining or removal of sand from river beds.

Mumbai: Action has been recommended against several developers by the state environment appraisal committee (SEAC-2) for undertaking construction without prior environment clearance (EC).

Ravi Budhiraja, chairperson of SEAC-2, which scrutinizes construction proposals for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, said there were nearly100 cases over the last year.
