The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed concern over smog conditions in the Capital caused by high pollution and decided to examine the problem and suggest remedial measures.

A three-judge Bench of Chief Justice Altamas Kabir and Justices S. S. Nijjar and J. Chelameswar agreed to look into the problem of smog during the course of hearing of petitions relating to disposal of toxic waste in Bhopal.

Air quality registers a marginal improvement

A new species of dengue-causing mosquito — the Asian Tiger mosquito — has been spotted in Delhi and it is resistant to traditional control mechanism.

The same mosquito variety is also responsible for the sudden rise in dengue cases in Delhi, said an MCD official. Municipal officials said Asian tiger mosquito, also known as Aedes albopictus, breeds in the open as against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which also causes dengue but breeds inside homes.

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought a reply from the Delhi Government’s Transport Department on a petition seeking review of an order dismissing a public interest litigation (PIL) for scrapping the BRT corridor in the Capital.

Having made no headway in resolving the longstanding Munak Canal imbroglio, the Delhi Government has written to the Cabinet Secretariat to call for a meeting by the Group of Ministers headed by Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to put an end to the dispute.

Delhi claims that as per the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two States, Delhi stands to get an additional 80 MGD of water over and above the quantum that it receives. Haryana on the other hand has been contesting this claim and maintains that 80 MGD is part of the quantum that Delhi receives.

The Delhi high court on Monday directed the city government to respond to a plea for review of its judgment dismissing the petition for scrapping the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand.

The review petition said the court had rejected the plea without dealing with the aspect that the 5.8-km road stretch in South Delhi was against norms of the Master Plan Delhi (MPD) 2021.
