IMPHAL: The population of the rare brow antlered deer, popularly known as sangai at Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP), has increased to 206 from 180 in 2003.

The Planning Commission on Thursday approved a Plan outlay of Rs 3,650 crore for Manipur for 2013-14, an increase of 4.3 per cent from the previous fiscal.

In 2012-13, the state government had received a Plan size of Rs 3,500 crore. The plan size was finalised here in a meeting between Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Chief Minister of Manipur Okram Ibobi Singh.

Loktak freshwater lake has been their source of living for generations

Protesting eviction, fishermen of the Loktak lake in Manipur have decided to fight for their rights. A meeting of fishermen and their family members, held on the Thanga islet on Sunday, condemned the “insensitive decision” of the government which forbids them from machine-fishing and plucking edible water plants in the largest freshwater lake in the northeast, their source of livelihood for generations.

Imphal: Fishermen and people residing around Loktak lake at Bishenpur district carried out a campaign to save the lake which is one of the biggest fresh water lake in Asia.

Fishermen went around the villages in and around the lake and spread awareness about the need of conserving the lake. The campaign was carried out as part of a week-long observance of International River Day organised by Committee of International River Day Celebration Week-2013 . The observation began on Tuesday last.
