Somalia will plunge back into famine if humanitarian aid is pulled out of the Horn of Africa country, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said in a statement Monday.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said 29 African countries out of 37 are currently in need of external food assistance, unchanged from November 2017.

Over 3.4 million Kenyans face death from starvation as a result of an acute food shortage that has hit at least 14 counties.

Some 27. 5 million people are in dire need of food aid in 10 African countries due to drought, officials announced last week.

Conflict is worsening global starvation, the United Nations said on Tuesday, as it called for greater peace-building efforts to end hunger for almost 500 million people living in war zones.

The UN Development Program (UNDP) on Tuesday warned that the food security situation in Somali “remains precarious for millions of Somalis, following the fifth consecutive year of drought.”

The UN warns that more than 400,000 children in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are severely malnourished and could die within months without emergency intervention.
