The Supreme Court today allowed the appeal of Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd and directed the Orissa government to act according to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two, signed on May 15, 2002. Overruling the Orissa high court order, a bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir also asked the state government to make recommendations to the Centre for granting iron ore mines, as per the MoU.

New Delhi The Centre has put Orissa government’s plans to get 33% free power from coal reject-based power plants on hold. The coal ministry has asked Orissa government not to hold up any clearances for coal blocks on the basis of such condition till a proper policy is formulated in this regard in consultation with the power ministry.

"We have told them to speed up the clearances for coal blocks. There is a huge shortage of coal in the country and there has to be faster approval for new allocatees," a coal ministry official said.

Tata Steel has flagged off the preparatory work of underground mining project at its Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM), which has an annual chromite ore beneficiation facility of 6.5 lakh tonne.

"Mining at SCM is fully-mechanised at present. The roadmap ahead is to operate underground mines. This will go a long way in conserving natural resources and, thereby, contribute to sustainable mining in the country," Tata Steel Managing Director HM Nerurkar was quoted in a company statement.
