The continued absence of a working scientific system of agriculture management in Uttarakhand for more than eight years after State formation has resulted in creating a situation in which the traditional step-farming method is providing a non-profitable enterprise for the native farmers.

BHAWANIPATNA: Dambarudhar Gartia of Boringpadar village in Narla block harvested 90 quintals of paddy on three acres of land this kharif against 40 quintals during the previous season. This is despite fickle monsoon. He earned Rs 90,000 against an investment of around Rs 5,000.

Gartia is not the only farmer reaping profits from the SRI (system of rice intensification) method of cultivation.

KRISHNAGIRI: Officials of the agriculture department have been instructed to produce short film/documentary on cultivation of paddy under System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method and its success stories in the State with inputs from the beneficiaries.

The short film/documentary would be screened to the public and in schools.
