Days after choking smog blanketed China's capital, the country's premier-designate added his voice to appeals to curb the toxic haze, but he offered few specifics and said there was no quick fix.

China's environmental watchdog on Monday ordered greater efforts to issue early warnings for air quality, as hazardous air pollution has hit many parts of the country in recent days.

Air quality in Beijing was the "worst on record" on Saturday and Sunday, according to environmentalists, as the city's pollution monitoring centre warned residents to stay indoors with pollution 30

Chinese media said on Monday the government had to take urgent action to tackle air pollution, which has blanketed parts of the country at dangerous levels in recent days, and one newspaper called

Choked in dense smog for three consecutive days, Beijing started emergency response measures on Sunday to curb the air pollution at hazardous levels.

Yellow Alert Issued As Dense Smog Covers Large Parts Of China; Traffic Hit

Beijing: Chinese meteorological authority has issued a yellow alert for fog indicating dangerous levels of smog in China’s northern and western regions, including major cities like Beijing and Chengdu. It said parts of China were facing the worst recorded pollution. A news agency quoted Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center website saying the density of PM2.5 particulates had surpassed 700 micrograms per cubic meter in many parts of the city. The World Health Organization considers a safe daily level to be 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
Earlier, the centre had reported that PM2.5, which indicates air quality, had touched the 500 point in some of the monitoring stations.

There has been discrepancies between the daily air quality reports of the Beijing municipal government, observations recorded at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, and Beijing residents’ perceptions of air quality. This study estimates Beijing’s daily area PM2.5 mass concentration by means of a novel technique SPA (Single Point Areal Estimation) that uses data from the single PM2.5 observation station of the U.S Embassy and the 18 PM10 observation stations of the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau.
