The Cauvery eco-system is in deep trouble with the current year being one of the worst drought years that the river has witnessed.

The delta region, known as ‘Marudha Nilam’, can no longer have that nomenclature as it is now shorn of Marudu trees, a native plant. The ‘minimum viable population’ (MVP) size of this tree has gone down and has become virtually an ‘endangered species’. Frequent loss of flows in the river over the past four decades has resulted in gradual degradation of the eco-system, laments K.V.Krishnamurthy, former Head of the Department of Botany, Bharathidasan University, considered an authority on the Cauvery’s flora and fauna.

PANJIM: The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has taken up a program to save vultures from getting extinct. Under this program, 30 young vultures will be ready to fly by year 2014.

Dr Asad Rehmani, a senior member of National Board for Willdlife and Director of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) said that the 30 young vultures will be released from the breeding facilities to the demarcated safe zones at three places.

City, Mahuva Identified Among 6 Vulture Safe Zones In The Country

Ahmedabad/Mahuva: Vulture conservation in Gujarat has got a major boost with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) selecting Mahuva and Ahmedabad among the six provisional vultures’ safe zones (VSZ) in India. Within three years, vultures successfully bred in captivity under the BNHS’s Save Asia’s Vultures from Extinction (SAVE) programme will be released in their natural environments in Mahuva.

The ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) is yet to catch up with the ground reality of the number of species of critically endangered birds in the country.

Rajkot: A nationwide netbased survey on house sparrow has been launched by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Mumbai, from April 1. Bird Conservation Society, Gujarat (BCSG), which is one of the 10 partnering institutions in this two-month long survey, has appealed to the people to contribute their data to this important study. BCSG has been working for the promotion of bird watching as a hobby and creating awareness about the importance of conservation.
