The death toll in the devastating flood of Manipur has increased to 23.

The recent identification of chromite deposits in two districts of Manipur, Ukhrul and Chandel, has led the government to grant mining clearances disregarding constitutional provisions. While environmental degradation and tribal displacement due to chromite mining in Odisha is well documented, the administration is yet to learn from Odisha’s mistakes.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to sanction Rs 1800 crore to develop key roads in Manipur, including the 110 Km Imphal-Moreh section of National Highway 2.

Manipur has been experiencing chilly weather since the New Year eve after a cold wave hit both hill and valley districts affecting normal life. The Hill districts particularly Chandel, Senapati and Ukhrul have witnessed snowfall since the last four days.
