Experts from home and abroad asked Bangladesh on Wednesday to mine its huge coal reserves before its fast depleting natural gas reserves run out. They however urged the country to tap the resource carefully to avoid human tragedies associated with coal mining. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has appealed to the power ministry to grant letter of awards (LoAs) for coal linkages to large size thermal projects due to be commissioned during the first two years of the 12th plan. CEA has argued that an early issuance of LoA would ensure timely coal linkages and thereby commissioning of projects as per the time schedule.

China plans to build a major emissions-free coal burning power station by 2015, the project chief said on Wednesday, putting it at the front of a tight global race to build the first commercial scale plant. GreenGen president Su Wenbin said he has escaped the funding and planning problems that have delayed similar ventures in the US and Europe because tackling climate change is a top priority for Beijing. "In China our system is different. When we decide to do something we can just push on with it...we know we will get government support," he told Reuters in an interview.

The government has assured that it is taking measures to ensure that people living in areas affected by subterranean fire and subsidence in the coal mining areas of West Bengal and Jharkhand are shifted. Shortage of coal supply to power stations could make electricity supply situation worse this summer. "The coal supply position to thermal power stations in the country is not comfortable,' Minister of State for Power Jairam Ramesh told the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

THE Binani Group is learnt to be in advanced negotiations with one of Indonesia's largest coal producers, PT Berau, to acquire a coal mine to feed its growing cement operations in India. The size of the proposed acquisition is estimated to be more than $100 million, according to sources close to the development.
