REGRETTING the ongoing strike by dyeing units in Tiruppur, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said on Monday that the government had already extended assistance to the units in setting up effluent treatment plans and was ready to extend further possible assistance based on the Supreme Court verdict.

Tirupur: The dyeing units are fasting paying the arrears from the total fine of Rs 67.65 crore imposed on them by the Supreme Court for loss of ecology, towards cleaning of Orathupalayam dam and polluting River Noyyal, as January 5 deadline to remit the fines has neared.

THE dyeing and washing unit owners will observe a one-day token fast here on Wednesday urging the State and Central governments for sanctioning 75 per cent subsidy for 20 common effluent treatment plants (CETPs), which were established at a cost of Rs 800 crore, because of the lack of a response from the government following their indefinite strike.

A Department of Environment drive saw nine Gazipur factories fined by a mobile court on Monday, for failure to use effluent treatment plants and allowing pollutants to enter the surrounding waters.
   Such drives will be continued against those polluting the environment, a department of environment statement said.
