Tirupur units plan to suspend operations from October 26

Tirupur: The knitwear production in Tirupur cluster is all set to come to a standstill as the entire 528 dyeing units affiliated to Dyers Association of Tirupur (DAT), an important link in the apparel manufacturing chain, have decided to suspend its operations from October 26.
Decision

Government will close down the industries that will not set up Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP).

Dr Hasan Mahmud, State Minister for Environment Ministry, said that government has taken initiatives to increase manpower and activities of the environment bureau.

The government has taken an initiative to amend the Bangladesh Environment Protection Act- 1995 for making it time- befitting to address the environmental hazards and protect the nature.

The Supreme Court has come down hard on industries polluting water bodies, applying the

Supreme Court judgement dated 06/10/2009 on river Noyyal pollution. The Court was of the opinion that there has been unabated pollution by the members of Tirupur Dyeing Factory Owners. They cannot escape the responsibility to meet out the expenses of reversing the ecology. They are bound to meet the expenses of removing the sludge of the river.

For a small scale industry it is difficult to construct, operate and maintain an individual treatment facility. Provision of land, expertise and trained staff, procurement of specialized equipment, installation of laboratory, sludge disposal on individual basis, etc will be almost impossible for a small unit.

THE Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to go through the report filed by the monitoring committee and submit a timeframe by which it intends to take action for lack of corrective measures by units or common effluent treatment plants located in Karur district.
