The flood situation in Dhemaji district has still remained grim. The district is cut off from the rest of the country for the 11th day today since the night of August 13. Heavy rains for the past two days have resulted in the Moridhol river overtopping its dykes on both the banks in Moridhol Gaon Panchayat areas inundating around 10 villages since Saturday.

Guwahati: A wave of flood, triggered by incessant rains along the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Assam districts, has killed two persons and inundated hundreds of hectares of crop land rendering over two lakh people homeless so far in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts where rivers, on spate, have overtopped embankments in many places disrupting surface communication.

With legislators across parties expressing fears about the impact in Assam of mega dams on rivers in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam Assembly Speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai has constituted a House Committee to carry out its own study of the problem.
