MUMBAI: With the July 26, 2005, floods still fresh in public memory, the civic body continues in its quest for a flood-free Mumbai. The Chitale Committee, set up immediately after the calamity, recommended that the existing network of Storm Water Drains (SWD) be augmented to cater to a rainfall intensity of 50mm/hour from the current 25mm as per the recommendation of Brimstowad report.

Geological records point out to a period of aridity 10,000 years ago, at the end stage of Pleistocene glaciation, which gradually changed to a wet phase. Copious rainfall in the Himalayan region gave rise to innumerable rivers, mainly Saraswati river along with six other rivers which flowed down in cascades bringing enormous amounts of water in the plains of Punjab, Rajasthan and north Gujarat.

The recent floods in the city did what officials could not do in last two years. In a significant development, the Centre has approved Rs 365 crore and Rs 212 crore for improving the drainage and sewerage system of the state capital, respectively. At present, only 40 per cent of the city has a proper drainage and sewerage system, leaving the rest of the areas heavily prone to flooding.

Employees of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) have decided to oppose the proposal of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to take over a sewage treatment plant (STP) with vacant land and buildings in Baghajatin.

Lead present in large drainage systems near residential areas in the City do not permeate water sources and contaminate them. This is the conclusion of a six-month study conducted by students of Christ University. The project was sanctioned by the National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning.

Over 1,500 cowsheds situated around Jogeshwari, Goregaon and Vasai-Virar area will now have to shift to Dapchiri in Dahanu. The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the state government to file a detailed affidavit within a week stating its plan to shift the tabelas out of the city.
